Student Immunization Requirements
Iowa law requires all students enrolling in a public school to provide proof of immunization. Under Iowa Code §139A.8, families must submit an official Iowa Department of Health and Human Services Certificate of Immunization to the school at the time of enrollment.
Students who do not yet meet all requirements may be admitted provisionally for up to 60 days if they have started the immunization series. In addition, the law allows for medical and religious exemptions. Families who qualify must provide a valid Certificate of Immunization Exemption (medical or religious) or a Provisional Certificate of Immunization in place of the standard certificate. More details about exemptions are outlined in Iowa Code §139A.8 and Iowa Administrative Code 641-7, as well as House File 299 regarding exemption communication requirements.
Medical Exemption: A medical exemption may be granted if a required immunization would be harmful to the health and well-being of the student or a member of their family or household, or if a vaccine must be delayed due to minimum interval spacing requirements.
Religious Exemption: A religious exemption may be granted when immunizations conflict with a genuine and sincere religious belief. It is important to note that exemptions cannot be based solely on philosophical, scientific, moral, personal, or medical objections, and they should not be used as a way to avoid truancy requirements for students lacking valid immunization documentation.
By ensuring compliance with these requirements, the district supports the health and safety of all students while respecting valid medical and religious considerations.
Immunization forms are available during registration and can be accessed via the Department of Health and Human Services Vaccines & Immunization webpage.
